About This Calculator
The Take-Home Paycheck Calculator helps you determine your actual take-home pay after all deductions, including federal and state taxes, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions, and health insurance premiums.
Understanding your take-home pay is essential for budgeting and financial planning. This calculator provides an estimate based on your gross pay and various deductions. Actual amounts may vary based on your specific tax situation and employer benefits.
Formula & Calculation Method
Take-Home Pay Calculation:
Taxable Income = Gross Pay - Pre-Tax Deductions (401k, etc.)
Federal Tax = Based on tax brackets and filing status
State Tax = Taxable Income × State Tax Rate
Local Tax = Taxable Income × Local Tax Rate
Social Security = Taxable Income × 6.2% (up to wage base)
Medicare = Taxable Income × 1.45%
Take-Home Pay = Gross Pay - All Deductions
Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income, which can lower your tax liability. Post-tax deductions like health insurance premiums are deducted after taxes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between gross pay and take-home pay?
Gross pay is your total earnings before deductions. Take-home pay (net pay) is what you receive after taxes, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions, health insurance, and other deductions.
How do pre-tax deductions affect my take-home pay?
Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income, which lowers your tax liability. This means you pay less in taxes while saving for retirement, effectively increasing your take-home pay compared to post-tax savings.
What is the Social Security wage base?
Social Security tax (6.2%) is only applied to income up to the wage base limit ($160,200 in 2023). Income above this limit is not subject to Social Security tax, though Medicare tax applies to all income.
Why is my take-home pay different from this calculation?
Actual take-home pay may differ due to additional deductions (life insurance, disability insurance, union dues), tax credits, different withholding allowances, or state-specific tax rules. This calculator provides an estimate.
