About This Calculator

The Social Security Calculator helps you estimate your Social Security retirement benefits based on your average earnings and planned retirement age. Social Security benefits are calculated using your 35 highest earning years and are adjusted based on when you choose to start receiving benefits.

This calculator provides an estimate based on simplified calculations. Actual benefits depend on your complete earnings history, which you can view on your Social Security statement. For accurate estimates, create an account at ssa.gov to access your personalized benefit estimates.

Formula & Calculation Method

Social Security Benefit Calculation:

AIME = Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (35 highest years)
PIA = Primary Insurance Amount (using bend points)
Early Retirement: Reduce by 5/9% per month (max 30%)
Late Retirement: Increase by 2/3% per month (max 8% per year)

Social Security uses a progressive benefit formula with three bend points. Benefits are reduced if you claim before full retirement age and increased if you delay beyond full retirement age (up to age 70).

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter Birth Year: Input your year of birth to determine full retirement age.
  2. Enter Retirement Age: Input the age at which you plan to start receiving benefits (62-70).
  3. Enter Average Annual Income: Input your average annual income over your working years.
  4. View Results: See estimated monthly and annual benefits, and how early/late retirement affects your benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is full retirement age?

Full retirement age (FRA) is the age at which you can receive 100% of your Social Security benefit. It ranges from 66 to 67 depending on your birth year. Claiming before FRA reduces benefits, while delaying increases them.

When should I start taking Social Security?

You can start as early as age 62 (with reduced benefits) or delay until age 70 (with increased benefits). The best age depends on your health, financial needs, and other retirement income sources.

How is Social Security calculated?

Social Security uses your 35 highest earning years, adjusts them for inflation, calculates your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME), then applies a progressive formula with bend points to determine your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA).

Can I work while receiving Social Security?

Yes, but if you are under full retirement age, benefits may be reduced if you earn above certain limits. Once you reach full retirement age, there is no limit on earnings.
