About This Calculator

The Healthy Weight Calculator helps you determine a healthy weight range and ideal weight based on your height, gender, and frame size. This calculator uses the Robinson formula and BMI guidelines to provide personalized weight recommendations.

A healthy weight is typically associated with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. However, ideal weight can vary based on individual factors like muscle mass, bone density, and body composition. This calculator provides a starting point for weight management goals.

Formula & Calculation Method

Healthy Weight Calculation:

Robinson Formula (Ideal Weight):
Men: Ideal Weight = 52 + 1.9 × (Height(inches) - 60)
Women: Ideal Weight = 49 + 1.7 × (Height(inches) - 60)

Frame Size Adjustment:
Small Frame: -10%
Medium Frame: No adjustment
Large Frame: +10%

Healthy Weight Range (BMI 18.5-24.9):
Min Weight = 18.5 × Height(m)²
Max Weight = 24.9 × Height(m)²

The Robinson formula is considered more accurate than older formulas like Devine. Frame size adjustments account for bone structure differences. The healthy weight range is based on BMI guidelines from the World Health Organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I determine my frame size?

Frame size is based on wrist circumference relative to height. Measure your wrist: Small frame (women <6", men <6.5"), Medium (women 6-6.25", men 6.5-7"), Large (women >6.25", men >7"). Alternatively, use your build appearance as a guide.

Is ideal weight the same for everyone?

No, ideal weight varies based on individual factors including muscle mass, bone density, body composition, age, and genetics. These formulas provide estimates, but your ideal weight may differ based on your unique circumstances.

What if I have a lot of muscle?

If you have high muscle mass, you may weigh more than the "ideal" weight but still be healthy. Muscle weighs more than fat, so athletes and those with high muscle mass may have higher BMIs while still being in excellent health. Focus on body composition over weight alone.

Should I aim for the middle of the range?

The middle or lower end of the healthy range is often a good target, but individual factors matter. If you're very active with high muscle mass, the upper end may be appropriate. Consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best weight range for your specific situation.
