About This Calculator

The Grade Calculator helps you calculate your course grade based on assignments, exams, and other graded work. It supports both weighted and unweighted grade calculations, allowing you to see how different assignments affect your overall grade.

Enter your scores and maximum points for each assignment, along with their weights (percentages of total grade). The calculator will compute your weighted average, unweighted average, and letter grade. You can add or remove assignments as needed.

Formula & Calculation Method

Grade Calculation:

Weighted Average:
Weighted Average = Σ(Score/MaxScore × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)
= Σ(Percentage × Weight) ÷ Total Weight

Unweighted Average:
Unweighted Average = (Σ(Scores) ÷ Σ(MaxScores)) × 100

Letter Grade:
A: ≥90% | B: ≥80% | C: ≥70% | D: ≥60% | F: <60%

Weighted averages give more importance to assignments with higher weights (e.g., final exams worth 40% of the grade). Unweighted averages treat all assignments equally.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter Assignment Details: For each assignment, enter the name, your score, maximum score, and weight (percentage).
  2. Add More Assignments: Click "Add Assignment" to include more graded work.

  4. View Results: See your weighted average, unweighted average, and letter grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted averages?

Weighted averages multiply each assignment's percentage by its weight (importance) before averaging. Unweighted averages treat all assignments equally. Weighted averages are more common in course grading.

How do I calculate my final grade?

Enter all your assignments with their scores, maximum scores, and weights. The calculator will show your current weighted average, which represents your overall course grade.

What if I don't know the weight of an assignment?

You can leave the weight as 0 or estimate it, but for accurate results you should use the actual weights from your syllabus. An assignment with a weight of 0 is excluded from the weighted average — its weight is not redistributed to the other assignments. The non-zero weights you enter are used as-is, with the weighted average divided by the sum of those weights, so they do not need to add up to 100%. The unweighted average still counts every assignment equally, regardless of weight.

Can I calculate what score I need on a final exam?

Yes! Enter your current assignments, then add the final exam with a score of 0. Adjust the score until your desired grade appears. This shows what you need to achieve your target grade.
