About This Calculator
The Debt Payoff Calculator helps you determine how long it will take to pay off your debt based on your monthly payment amount and interest rate. This tool is essential for creating a debt repayment strategy and understanding the true cost of borrowing.
By entering your debt balance, interest rate, and planned monthly payment, you can see exactly when you'll be debt-free and how much interest you'll pay over the life of the debt.
Formula & Calculation Method
Debt Payoff Time Formula:
n = -log(1 - (P × r) / M) / log(1 + r)
Where:
n = Number of months to payoff
P = Principal (debt balance)
r = Monthly interest rate (Annual rate / 12 / 100)
M = Monthly payment amount
Total Interest = (n × M) - P
This formula calculates how many months are needed to pay off the debt. The monthly payment must be greater than the monthly interest to make progress. Higher payments reduce both payoff time and total interest paid.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my monthly payment is less than the interest?
If your monthly payment doesn't cover the interest, your debt will grow rather than decrease. The calculator will show this as an infinite payoff time. You need to increase your payment to at least cover the interest.
How can I pay off debt faster?
Increase your monthly payment amount. Even small increases can significantly reduce payoff time and total interest. Consider using the debt avalanche or snowball method to prioritize which debts to pay first.
Does this calculator work for credit cards?
Yes! This calculator works for any debt with a fixed interest rate and fixed monthly payment, including credit cards, personal loans, and other installment debts.
What if I have multiple debts?
Calculate each debt separately, or combine them into a single calculation if you're consolidating. The calculator shows individual debt payoff timelines.
