About This Calculator

The College Cost Calculator helps you estimate future college expenses and determine how much you need to save to cover education costs. College costs have been rising faster than inflation, making early planning essential for families.

This calculator accounts for inflation in college costs and investment returns on your savings. Use it to plan your college savings strategy, whether through 529 plans, savings accounts, or other investment vehicles.

Formula & Calculation Method

College Cost Calculation:

Future Cost = Current Cost × (1 + Inflation Rate)^Years
Future Value of Savings = Current Savings × (1 + Return Rate)^Years
Future Value of Contributions = Monthly × [((1+R)^N - 1) / R]
Where: R = Monthly Return Rate, N = Number of Months
Total Saved = Future Value of Savings + Future Value of Contributions
Shortfall = Future Cost - Total Saved

This calculation accounts for compound growth on both your initial savings and monthly contributions. The shortfall shows how much more you need to save, and the calculator can determine the additional monthly contribution — beyond your current contribution — needed to fully fund college costs.
