About This Calculator

The Body Type Calculator helps you determine your body type classification based on your shoulder, waist, and hip measurements. Body types are generally categorized as Ectomorph (lean and narrow), Mesomorph (athletic and muscular), or Endomorph (wider and stores fat easily).

This calculator analyzes the ratios between your measurements to classify your body type. While body types provide general guidance, remember that most people are a combination of types, and body composition can change with diet and exercise.

Formula & Calculation Method

Body Type Classification:

Shoulder-to-Waist Ratio = Shoulder ÷ Waist
Waist-to-Hip Ratio = Waist ÷ Hip
Shoulder-to-Hip Ratio = Shoulder ÷ Hip

Classification:
• Mesomorph: Shoulder/Waist > 1.3, Waist/Hip < 0.85
• Endomorph: Shoulder/Waist < 1.1, Waist/Hip > 0.9
• Ectomorph: Shoulder/Waist < 1.2, Waist/Hip < 0.85
• Balanced: Other combinations

Body type classification is based on the relationship between shoulder, waist, and hip measurements. These ratios help identify your natural body structure, which can guide fitness and nutrition strategies.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure Shoulders: Measure around the widest part of your shoulders (across the deltoids).
  2. Measure Waist: Measure at the narrowest point of your waist (usually just above the navel).
  3. Measure Hips: Measure around the widest part of your hips/buttocks.
  4. Enter Measurements: Input all three measurements in centimeters.
  5. View Results: See your body type classification and description.

Tip: Take measurements in the morning before eating, and ensure the measuring tape is level and snug but not tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three main body types?

Ectomorph: Naturally lean with narrow shoulders, small waist, and narrow hips. Mesomorph: Athletic build with broad shoulders, narrow waist, and well-defined muscles. Endomorph: Wider frame with tendency to store fat, medium shoulders, wider waist, and wider hips.

Can I change my body type?

While you can't change your bone structure, you can significantly alter your body composition through diet and exercise. Ectomorphs can build muscle, endomorphs can lose fat, and mesomorphs can maintain or enhance their athletic build.

Is body type the same as body shape?

Body type refers to your natural tendency to gain/lose weight and build muscle (somatotype). Body shape refers to the visual distribution of fat and muscle. They're related but not identical concepts.

How accurate is this calculator?

This calculator provides a general classification based on measurement ratios. Most people are a combination of body types rather than purely one type. For a more comprehensive assessment, consider professional body composition analysis.
