About This Calculator

The Annuity Payout Calculator helps you determine how much you'll receive in monthly or annual payments from an annuity. An annuity is a financial product that provides regular payments over a specified period in exchange for an initial investment.

This calculator can estimate payouts for both immediate annuities (payments start right away) and deferred annuities (payments start after a deferral period). Use this tool to plan your retirement income and understand how annuity payouts work.

Formula & Calculation Method

Annuity Payout Calculation:

Monthly Rate = Annual Rate ÷ 12
Monthly Payout = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N - 1]
Where: P = Principal, R = Monthly Rate, N = Number of Periods
Annual Payout = Monthly Payout × 12
Total Payout = Monthly Payout × Total Periods

This formula calculates the fixed monthly payment needed to fully distribute the principal plus interest over the payout period. For deferred annuities, this calculator assumes a fixed 10-year deferral period: the principal first grows with annual compound interest for 10 years (Future Value = Principal × (1 + Annual Rate)^10), and that future value is then paid out over the payout period.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between immediate and deferred annuities?

Immediate annuities start paying out right away after you make the initial investment. Deferred annuities allow your money to grow for a period before payouts begin, typically resulting in higher payments.

Are annuity payouts guaranteed?

Fixed annuities provide guaranteed payouts, while variable annuities depend on investment performance. This calculator assumes fixed annuity rates. Always review your annuity contract for specific terms.

Can I change my payout period?

Some annuities offer flexibility, but many have fixed terms. Some annuities offer lifetime payouts. Consult your annuity provider about available options before purchasing.

Are annuity payouts taxable?

Yes, annuity payouts are generally taxable as ordinary income. If you purchased the annuity with pre-tax dollars (like in a 401(k)), the entire payout is taxable. If purchased with after-tax dollars, only the interest portion is taxable.
